The 2016 New York Guitar Festival kicked off at the Winter Garden Atrium with an opening event that paid tribute to gospel/blues legend Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
Performers for the event included Luther Dickinson, John Medeski, and AJ Ghent as the house band with Grammy-winner Alvin Youngblood Hart, Valerie June, Dom Flemons, Ruthie Foster, Rachael Davis, Trixie Whitley. Each artist performed two songs, one of their own choosing and one from Tharpe’s catalog.
